The direct-to-consumer marketplace is unmatched when it comes to bringing artisans, DIY-ers and skilled entrepreneurs to life to showcase their designs to life. Now, the e-commerce company has become a leader in home and design, so much so that it recently launched its 2023 Decor Trends Guide for shoppers worldwide to gain inspiration on what to add to their home’s interior next.
“In an age of social media, shoppers are increasingly looking to stand out from the crowd, and many are turning to handmade and vintage pieces that are totally unique and no one else has,” Dayna Isom Johnson, Etsy trend expert, exclusively told the New York Post. “We’re also seeing shoppers buying in line with their values more than ever, whether that means shopping sustainably or supporting small businesses, and Etsy is home to millions of items made by real people around the world.”

“Etsy is also one of the top and most popular platforms for buying vintage items — in fact, someone searches for a vintage item on Etsy every two seconds,” Johnson points out. “Shoppers are particularly loving vintage lamps, furniture, and wedding items — like dresses and engagement rings — as many turn to secondhand styles as a way to own something truly unique while also shopping sustainably.”

1. Dark Woods
According to the 2023 Decor Trends Guide, there has been a 337% increase in searches for walnut desks and accessories and a 28% increase in searches for brown seating or furniture. This isn’t to say that light rustic beige is ‘so long, farewell,’though, even though Etsy has been seeing a 14% decrease in searches for raw or light wood and a 29% decrease in searches for beige decor.
“Darker woods create a sense of warmth and coziness in a space, while also providing a touch of character and sophistication,” Johnson says. Another reason why to love darker woods? They’re timeless and versatile.
“Take a classic vintage walnut credenza, for example, which can effortlessly be styled with anything from playful disco ball decor to a modern accent rug to an old world, Parisian-inspired mantel,” she offers.

2. Mermaidcore
If you’re keen on following TikTok trends, then you’ve likely heard of Mermaidcore. It’s slowing zero signs of coming to a halt — and is even paving a clear path into the home decor territory.
“This emerging ocean-inspired look is a much-welcomed extension of some of our favorite existing trends – like last summer’s crustaceancore and coastal grandmother – but with a more whimsical and playful twist,” Johnson explains. “In addition to shoppers looking to add a touch of under-the-sea-inspired glam to their spaces, many are also likely leaning into the nostalgic feelings that this trend evokes ahead of a soon-to-be-released upcoming sea-themed movie.”
In the last three months, there has been a 125% increase in searches on Etsy for scalloped runners, a 30% increase in searches for oyster shell ring dishes, a 24% increase in searches for mother of pearl trays and a 22% increase in searches for bubble light fixtures or pendants, per the 2023 Decor Trends Guide.

3. Paper Lights
Tapping into ancient China-inspired decor, shoppers worldwide are embracing paper lighting in a multitude of sizes and styles. Because of its unique nature of diffusing light, its soft and warm moody glow appeals to a variety of aesthetics.
“Nothing creates a cozy atmosphere quite like the perfect lamp — and these days our favorite shades are taking a leaf right from a time-honored style that dates back to ancient China: paper lighting,” Johnson reveals. “Opt for a pastel blue pendant [starting at $174] or a mushroom-shaped tabletop lamp [$65] for a soft and warm glow that creates an inviting atmosphere.”
According to the 2023 Decor Trends Guide, there has been an 85% increase in searches on Etsy for hanging paper lanterns, a 61% increase in searches on Etsy for rice paper lighting and a 24% increase in searches on Etsy for paper floor lamps.

4. Rugs with Personality
As of late, shoppers are adding some spice and flavor to their floors with statement rugs. On Etsy, you’ll find patterns galore, a fully stocked repertoire of colors, textures and sizes.
Etsy has seen an astonishing 401% increase in searches on Etsy for handwoven rugs, a 62% increase in searches for custom rugs, a 55% increase in searches for colorful rugs and a 49% increase in searches for wavy rugs, per the 2023 Decor Trends Guide.
“Rugs are a great way to have fun with color, pattern and print without overwhelming a space,” Johnson points out. “Whether you choose a 70s-inspired shag, handwoven geometric Moroccan design or an intricate vintage Turkish stunner, a new rug is one of the fastest ways to make a statement.”

5. Jewelry for the Home
Long live the days when jewelry was for accessorizing your outfit. Now, jewelry is also making a statement for the home! Namely, these decorative accents and little luxuries adorn rooms with grandeur and vast appeal — accessorizing in a unique way.
“Pepper your space with sun-catchers that joyfully reflect light and crystal-studded knobs that take your cabinets from ordinary to boho-chic in the blink of an eye — and don’t forget to dress up your houseplants with a gemstone-adorned plant stake while you’re at it,” Johnson recommends. “These finishing touches add a dose of glamor and can even be swapped out seasonally.”
In the last three months, Etsy has seen a 139% increase in searches for gemstone decor, a 50% increase in searches for sun-catcher prisms, a 46% increase in searches for unique wall hooks and a 13% increase in searches for brass kitchen hardware.

6. Vintage Patterns
Enter the revival of old school patterns. They’re making a grand leap, mostly channeling cozy, eclectic and nostalgic looks and feels. In turn, one’s space instantly can become more sophisticated and refined, while also being unique and playful.
“Vintage patterns are on the rise, showing up in new and unfamiliar places,” Johnson says. “Reminiscent of old country charm, traditional patterns like toile, chintz, and vintage floral prints are popping up everywhere from textiles to teacups, introducing a touch of eclectic nostalgia straight out of our regency romance dreams.”
Etsy has seen a whopping 1,041% increase in searches for embroidered botanical items, while searches for vintage wallpaper are up 162%, searches for floral home decor are up 118% and searches for toile art are up 32%.
